Local News in Brief : San Clemente : Golf Course Gets OK for Cart Path Under I-5
- Share via
An agreement was signed Tuesday that allows San Clemente’s Shorecliffs Golf Course to construct a cart path on the Avenida Vaquero underpass of Interstate 5.
The path will be in addition to an existing route that uses a storm drain channel to go under the freeway to the course’s 10th through 18th holes. The storm drain is flooded often during the rainy season.
Floyd Cate, president of the Assn. of Shorecliffs Residents, said Rep. Ron Packard (R-Carlsbad) intervened after the California Department of Transportation denied use of the underpass in 1986 because federal policy does not permit encroachment on interstate rights of way.
Packard, who attended the lease-signing agreement Tuesday, asked Caltrans to reconsider its decision on the grounds that the golf course already exists as a recreational facility and no new commercial uses would occur.
