A pit bull Wednesday attacked and seriously injured a 6-year-old girl who tried to pet the dog in the Florence-area yard where it was kept, officials said.
“One witness said the dog was shaking the girl like a rag doll” before its owner was able to calm it down, Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Wehner said.
The girl, Sonia Santillan, was listed in serious condition at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center, where she was being treated for bites on her leg, face, neck, head and right side.
The dog was picked up by the county Department of Animal Control pending further investigation.
