Man Convicted of Obscene Mailings

A Hollywood man was convicted today of federal obscenity charges for using the mail to sell videotapes depicting bestiality and sado-masochism.
Jurors deliberated less than an hour before convicting Gary J. Levinson, 38, of three counts of mailing obscene material, a verdict the defense called an assault on free speech because the government failed to prove the tapes were legally obscene. Levinson had been scheduled to plead guilty to two of the charges last week, but he disappeared. His two-day trial was conducted without him. Levinson could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and fined $750,000.
