H.J. Heinz Co. of Pittsburgh terminated its $225-million agreement to acquire Bumble Bee Seafoods, a tuna canner based in San Diego, two months after the Justice Department announced that it would oppose the merger on antitrust grounds. The proposed merger, which would have given Heinz 60% control of the $1.4-billion U.S. canned tuna market, had also drawn opposition from the American Tunaboat Assn., a fishing trade group, alleging the merger would place too much price control under the Heinz umbrella. Bumble Bee declined to comment on the termination or say whether it would seek another buyer.
