A 17-year-old Inglewood youth drowned Sunday on the east shore of Castaic Lake, where swimming is prohibited, authorities said.
The youth, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, did not know how to swim, authorities said. Lifeguards found him submerged in about 4 feet of water about 5:30 p.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Captain Mike Carrick.
The victim was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said nursing supervisor Rose Morelli.
The area, designated for fishing only, has been the site of frequent swimming accidents, Carrick said.
“They’re constantly having to chase people out of the water,” he said.
