JERUSALEM — Israel plans to release about 160 Palestinian prisoners today as a good-will gesture during the Muslim Eid al Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice, military officials said Sunday.
The officials said the prisoners will be freed from the Ketziot detention camp in the Negev Desert.
Military officials say that between 3,000 and 4,000 Arabs are being held in the Ketziot camp. Most have been detained without trial, usually for six months.
About 5,000 Palestinians accused of taking part in the uprising on the West Bank and Gaza Strip are detained in Israeli prisons.
