WAC Football Coaches Favor BYU

JACKSON, Wyo. — Brigham Young University was a solid selection to win the Western Athletic Conference football title and San Diego State was picked to finish fourth in a poll of conference coaches released Sunday.
BYU, which had its streak of 10 consecutive conference titles ended two seasons ago by the Aztecs, received six of nine first-place votes and finished with 62 points.
SDSU was fourth with 39 points in the poll conducted at the annual WAC summer meetings here this week.
The Cougars also were picked to finish first in a poll of media attending the meetings. BYU received 27 first-place votes and 289 points. The Aztecs were fifth in the media poll with 141 points.
TENNIS
Gretchen Magers of San Diego defeated Terry Phelps of Larchmont, N.Y., 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, Sunday to win a $175,000 tournament at Schenectady, N.Y. Magers won $8,000. Phelps received $4,000.
BASEBALL
Bernie Falk of MiraCosta College went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs but it wasn’t enough as an Orange County all-star team defeated the San Diego County Collegiate Baseball League, 12-5, in an all-star game at Smith Field Sunday.
Tom Smythe of Cal State Long Beach had a solo home un and Jon Berger of UC Irvine had a two-run home run to lead the Metro all-stars, who scored in each of the first five innings.
