South Africa’s largest paper, the Sunday Times, reported that South African-born runner Zola Budd, who dropped out of international racing to get a university degree in politics, is attending classes on a scholarship that requires her to run nationally in the university’s colors.
But Budd, who fled her adopted country of Britain after the International Amateur Athletics Federation threatened action against the British Olympic team if she competed, will not run for the University of the Orange Free State, the Sunday Times reported.
“I am sure we can reach some arrangement,” the paper quoted Budd as saying. “I will train with the university’s athletics team but do not want to spoil my chances of competing internationally again.”
