Tekelec Posts 2nd-Quarter Profit of $1.3 Million

Tekelec, a Calabasas producer of testing devices for telecommunications systems, posted a $1.3-million profit in the second quarter, contrasted with a year-earlier loss of $178,000.
The profit, equal to 32 cents a share, came on an 86% jump in Tekelec’s revenue to $7.4 million in the quarter that ended June 30, from $3.98 million a year earlier.
Orders for a principal Tekelec product, called the Chameleon 32, “continued to be strong worldwide” in the latest period, Tekelec President Peter N. Vicars said in a statement.
The year-earlier loss mostly stemmed from the write-off of two discontinued product lines, which resulted in a $381,000 after-tax charge against Tekelec’s earnings.
