Halloween is over but the horror never ends at the video store, where this week’s new addition to the scare rack is the apocalyptically spooky “The Seventh Sign” (RCA/Columbia, $89.95, R), which pits a pregnant Demi Moore (Bruce Willis’ missus) against the forces of evil. Bruce isn’t around to help; the “Die Hard” (and, lest we forget, “Moonlighting”) star has his own new video to worry about: the comedy-adventure “Sunset” (RCA/Columbia, $89.95, R), a Blake Edwards film from earlier in the year--a flick that flickered out quickly at the box office. Willis plays Tom Mix, who (fictionally only) teams up with Wyatt Earp (James Garner) to investigate a murder case.
After being trampled by the mobs trying to buy “E.T.” last week, you may be a little hesitant to return to your favorite video store, but if you do you may find the demand somewhat less for “Return to Snowy River” (Disney, $89.95, PG), an Australian sequel to “The Man from Snowy River.”
Sally Kirkland earned a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for her role as “Anna” (Vestron, $79.98, PG-13). She plays a Czech film star who can’t land a role in New York City.
Other Videos
Ting-a-ling, are you listening? There’s music in the air at your video store, some of it Christmasy, some of it not. In the Yule corner there’s “A Trip to Christmas” and “An Old-Fashioned Christmas” (VAI, $19.95 each), musical-variety tapes compiled from old Telephone Hour shows; “A Classical Christmas” (featuring the New Philharmonic Masterpiece Orchestra and the UCLA Madrigal Singers) and “Silent Night with Jose Carreras” (Kultur, $19.95 each); and “Christmas at Ripon Cathedral” (Home Vision, $24.95) with Dame Janet Baker and the Huddersfield Choral Society.
If your store doesn’t have some of the above, try these information numbers: VAI--(212) 799-7798, Kultur--(201) 229-2343, Home Vision--(800) 323-4222.
In the non-Yule corner: “Hurricane Irene” (Virgin, $19.98), a Tokyo concert benefiting the University of Peace and starring Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Jackson Browne, among others; “Savage” (Virgin, $16.98) a “video album” by the Eurythmics; and “Belinda Live!” (Virgin, $19.98), a concert by the most popular ex-Go-Go.
Other new videos: “The Video Guide to Stamp Collecting” (Premiere, $24.95) with Gary Burghoff, “Life in Camelot: The Kennedy Years” (HBO, $19.95), “JFK Remembered” (Vestron, $29.98), and profiles of Andy Warhol, Agatha Christie, Francis Bacon (the contemporary artist, not the long-gone writer), and Coco Chanel (Home Vision, $39.95 each).
Coming soon: Patrick Swayze fans are in for a video bonanza. His hit film “Dirty Dancing” has spurred “Swayze Dancing,” an instructional tape featuring the star’s choreographer mom, Patsy Swayze. Scheduled for Dec. 5 release, the video also has Patrick’s wife, Lisa Niemi, and his sister, Bambi Swayze, plus “a special guest appearance” by the man himself! Coming in January is “Tiger Warsaw,” a drama starring Swayze (Patrick, that is), who plays a man trying to put his life back together after a tragedy.
Also coming in January (the 11th, to be exact): “Jane Fonda’s Complete Workout”--her first exercise tape in two years. The star “has devised a unique, state-of-the-art program that promotes overall toning and aerobic fitness through exercises that maximize the burning of body fat, develop muscle tone, build strength and improve flexibility,” according to Fonda’s new video company, Warner. The 70-minute tape will sell for $29.98.
