SALEM, Mass. — A two-hour disturbance involving about 150 inmates of the Essex County Jail erupted after a television news show was broadcast depicting overcrowding at the jail.
Sheriff Charles Reardon told reporters that “there was a lot of destruction” inside the jail. He said inmates set small fires, pulled pipes off walls and knocked off railings Monday night. One inmate and one guard suffered minor injuries.
A man who identified himself as an inmate telephoned the Union-News newspaper in Springfield from the jail and said the violence began shortly after a segment on WCVB-TV’s “Chronicle” series focused on conditions at the jail.
