Authorities identified the 80-year-old Brentwood woman who died Friday after her Jaguar smashed through a gate and plunged into a swimming pool as Virginia Jacobs, while neighbors puzzled over how the slight woman could have backed out of her driveway into the water.
The first police officer to arrive at the scene, John Lopanta, dived into the pool, in the 100 block of North Bristol Avenue, but was unable to save the woman.
“She apparently accelerated by accident, lost control of the vehicle, drove through a gate and some bushes and then into the pool,” Sgt. Bob Troutt said.
