High School Basketball : Alemany’s Season Ends Abruptly
- Share via
All the Alemany High boys’ basketball team wanted to do was qualify for the third-place game of the Del Rey League tournament against St. Francis and then, possibly, a spot in the playoffs.
It looked like the Indians were well on their way to achieving at last half that with what seemed to be an insurmountable, 16-point halftime lead over St. John Bosco on Monday night.
But someone forgot the tell St. John Bosco. Led by guard Fabian Luna, who finished with a team-high 16 points, St. John Bosco (5-14, 2-6 in league play) put together a 17-6 run and outscored the visiting Indians, 35-16, in the second half en route to a 53-50 win that ended Alemany’s season.
Josh Hannaman sank two free throws with 49 seconds remaining to give the Braves a 51-48 lead and the game, although Alemany’s Will Burr had a potential game-tying three-point shot bounce off the rim with four seconds to play.
Alemany (3-18, 1-7), was paced by Jon Beauchemin’s game-high 18 points and five assists.
Alemany Coach Rocky Moore took responsibility for his team’s dismal second-half performance.
“We didn’t sustain,” he said. “We lost that intensity. I take the blame because I allowed the kids to do that.”
