IN BRIEF : Unseeded Aldrich Beats Rostagno

MEMPHIS — Pieter Aldrich of South Africa defeated 15th-seeded Derrick Rostagno of Brentwood 7-5, 6-2 today to open second-round play at the Volvo Tennis Indoor Championships.
Rostagno, who entered the tournament ranked 37th internationally, was the first seeded player of the tourney to take the court. Aldrich was unseeded at No. 73.
No. 1 seed Andre Agassi, third-seeded Tim Mayotte and eight other seeded entrants were scheduled for singles play today. Doubles competition also was to begin.
The $415,000 tournament at the Racquet Club of Memphis has drawn 48 singles players and 24 doubles teams. The top singles prize is $53,550, with $16,660 going to the winning doubles team.
