DETROIT — A fire ripped through a residential hotel early today, killing four people and injuring nearly 60 others, authorities said.
Fire officials said it appears the four-alarm blaze started at 3:12 a.m. in an apartment on the first floor of the Billinghurst Hotel. As the fire spread through the building, people began jumping from upper-story windows to escape the smoke and flames. Some of them jumped onto mattresses dragged from the burning building. Officials said 57 to 59 people, including four Detroit police officers, were taken to five Detroit hospitals.
