High School Soccer Roundup : Serra Girls Beat Granite Hills on Penalty Kick

In a sudden-death round of tie-breaking penalty kicks, forward Andrea Gormican scored the winning goal as Serra defeated Granite Hills, 1-0, in the first round of the San Diego Section 3-A girls’ soccer playoffs.
“I hate to see a game won like that,” Serra Coach Laurie Berger said. “I’d rather have a goal.”
Berger said the game was scoreless in regulation because of missed opportunities.
“Granite Hills played a good tough game but couldn’t score,” Berger said. “They were very aggressive.”
Serra (9-8-4), which will meet San Dieguito Saturday, went undefeated in the Eastern League (7-0-3).
Granite Hills finished 10-6-6.
On other Class 3-A girls’ games:
Torrey Pines 6, Castle Park 0--Center forward Danielle Napoli scored two goals for Torrey Pines (14-4-2), which took advantage of a defensive mistake to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Castle Park finished 10-7-4.
Mt. Carmel 1, Helix 0--Junior forward Nicole Hall scored 8 minutes into the game to give Mt. Carmel (11-7-6) the victory over Helix (7-9-3). Goalkeeper Heather Petterson had her 14th shutout.
Poway 1, Hilltop 0--Poway’s Kyle Clark scored with 15 minutes left off an assist by Alison Gibson. Goalkeeper Wendy Kevan had a save for Poway (14-4-5). Hilltop is 12-5-2.
Boys
Division 3-A first round
Poway 3, Castle Park 1--Eric Hill scored one goal and had two assists to lead Poway (15-4-3) over Castle Park (16-7-0). Hill’s goal was assisted by Kevin Legg. Poway’s other two goals were by Kevin Arthur and Ryan Nutting. Poway led, 1-0, at halftime.
Mt. Carmel 2, Madison 0--Fullback Travis Cottle scored midway through the first half, and forward Joey Plewak scored with 15 minutes left for Mt. Carmel (15-3-3). Madison is 9-6-3.
Sweetwater 1, Serra 0--Julio Roman scored off a corner kick from Gabriel Pulido with 10 minutes left. Daniel Topete recorded his 12th shutout for Sweetwater (17-3-2). Serra is 11-6-4.
Bonita Vista 2, El Capitan 1-- Bonita Vista advanced with a 18-3-1 record. Tim Von Feldt scored on a penalty kick in last 5 minutes for El Capitan (10-9-4).
