Former Rep. John Jenrette (D-S.C.), convicted of accepting a bribe in the FBI Abscam sting operation, was found guilty of shoplifting and altering price tags on clothing in a Virginia store, and was sentenced to jail. Jenrette, 52, was given 90 days in jail on each of the two misdemeanor counts, with 75 days suspended on each. The disbarred attorney also was fined $1,000 on each count, with $500 suspended on each. The verdict came after a three-hour non-jury trial. Defense attorneys protested the sentence as “outrageous” and requested a jury trial, which was set for May 18.
