Jeanne Weinsheim hit a bases-empty homer in the bottom of the first, and the University of San Diego went on to defeat Coast Guard, 4-0, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at USD. Coast Guard won the second game, 5-1.
Belen McPhetrige (2-1) went the distance for USD (11-11) in the opener, striking out three. Coast Guard (1-3) then won its first game of the season, taking advantage of five errors.
MEN’S TENNIS
UCSD’s Randy Mark defeated Steve Hession, 6-2, 6-2, and teammate Jeff French beat Greg Beck 6-0, 6-0, as UC San Diego defeated Rochester, 7-1.
French and Mark later teamed up for a 6-2, 6-3 doubles victory over Bill Batta and Alex Mauro.
MEN’S SOCCER
The University of San Diego played its first-ever night game at the school’s football stadium and came away with a 1-0 victory over a touring team from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
