In nonconference baseball:
Cal State Fullerton 7, Cal State Los Angeles 5--Brent Mayne and Ralph Ramirez each hit home runs and Dave Staton got a key double as Fullerton (24-14) won at home.
Cal State Los Angeles (17-21) took a 4-1 lead in the fourth after Brad Mengel hit a three-run homer and Ed Timental followed with a solo home run.
Ramirez’s solo homer in Fullerton’s half of the fourth closed the gap to 4-2. Mayne hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his second consecutive game with a home run, to tie the score at 4-4. Later in the fifth, Staton doubled home Rex Peters to give Fullerton a 5-4 lead. It was a lead it never relinquished.
Reliever Rich Faulks got the victory, pitching 2 1/3 innings. Fullerton committed five errors.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 5, Arizona State 3--Mike Briggs defeated David Lomicky, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, for the Anteaters (19-6) at Irvine.
La Verne 5, Christ College Irvine 4--Juni Hernandez and Armen Hilario defeated John Endicott and Glenn Wagner, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in the decisive doubles match as La Verne won at home.
University of San Diego 7, Chapman 1--Dave Stewart defeated Olivier Amerlinck, 6-3, 6-0, in singles and then teamed with J.R. Edwards to defeat Amerlinck and Darrin Capik, 7-5, 7-5, for San Diego (21-6). Chapman is 10-9.
