‘Mauri’
New Zealand, 1988, 100 minutes 6 p.m. The first-time writer-director, Merata Mita, co-produced the movie with Geoff “Utu” Murphy, and uses that film’s star, Anzac Wallace, as her lead. Mita is also part Maori and what she gives us is a pointed but dreamy penetration into another culture, provincial Maori society in New Zealand, This is a rough-hewn, sometimes fascinating rumination on the nearly mystical links between a people and their land. RECOMMENDED.
