La Habra High School spoiled Brea-Olinda’s softball season opener this year, handing the Wildcats a 2-0 loss.
Today, Brea-Olinda (17-6) gets a chance at revenge when the teams play at 3 p.m. in a Southern Section 4-A second-round playoff game at Brea-Olinda.
“We are very eager,” Brea-Olinda Coach Sharen Caperton said. “It is called revenge time. If somebody beats you, you always want to be able to come back and beat them again. So we have a motivating factor here.”
La Habra Coach Donn Brown said the Highlanders (16-7) will not be taking the rematch lightly.
The Highlanders are out to prove that they deserve a little more credit than some opposing coaches are giving them.
“It seems like some of the games we won, the other teams took it away by saying, ‘Oh my pitcher had a bad day on the mound,’ or ‘There was that error,’ that kind of stuff,” Brown said. “An error, that is part of the game. It seemed as if many of our opponents never gave us any credit.”
But Caperton is not making that mistake. “We know this is going to be the battle of our lives,” she said.
Brea is led by senior pitcher Kelly Cook (16-5), who has struck out 223 of 603 batters and walked 40.
La Habra is led by pitcher Laura Corson (14-7), who had an 0.45 ERA in the regular season.
In other 4-A games involving Orange County teams, fourth-seeded Kennedy (19-4) travels to Millikan (19-6). Western (23-5) is at Rubidoux (16-9). Sunny Hills (19-6) travels to Glendale (18-5), Garden Grove (19-6) is at Crescenta Valley (20-3) and Canyon (20-11) is at home against third-seeded Diamond Bar (21-2).
In the 1-A playoffs, Connelly (10-3) is at home against second-seeded Big Bear (18-3), and in Small Schools, St. Margaret’s Academy (15-6) plays host to top-seeded Woodcrest Christian (14-4).
