Beaumont High School took control with a five-run second inning to defeat Fillmore, 10-7, in an error-filled Southern Section 1-A baseball championship game Friday night at Blair Field in Long Beach.
Trent Christ drove in three runs for Beaumont, including two in the second on a bases-loaded double that gave Beaumont a 4-1 edge. Christ later scored in that inning on an error by shortstop Art Sosa. It was one of 10 errors, eight of them by Fillmore, in the game. Only five of Beaumont’s runs were earned.
In the third inning, Christ also had a run-scoring single, driving in Chris Harper, who walked and stole second.
Beaumont starter Bryant Fitch, who had not pitched in the playoffs because of injuries, gained the victory although he went only four innings before being relieved by Pat Kasey.
Beaumont finished the season 18-8. Fillmore fell to 16-7.
Mammoth 6, Rosamond 4--Cruz Hernandez’s two-out, two-run single broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the sixth inning, securing the Southern Section Small Schools championship for Rosamond at Blair Field.
The single by Hernandez, the team’s No. 9 hitter, came after Jason King and J.B. Jordan had each reached base on infield singles.
Rosamond ended the season 23-3. Mammoth finished 12-10.
