CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK, N.M. — About 180 firefighters used air tankers and helicopters Saturday to battle two fires in steep canyon terrain at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, a U.S. Forest Service official said.
The larger of the lightning-sparked blazes consumed 350 acres of dry desert shrubbery, fire information officer John Carpenter said. He said the fire was expected to be contained by this evening.
