They came to Long Beach this month, 500 strong, from 34 states, Puerto Rico and even Great Britain--disabled veterans bent on proving just how able they are. They competed in traditional track and field events: races as long as 5,000 meters, the shot put, discus and javelin. They also matched muscles and wits at swimming, archery, basketball, billiards, bowling, table tennis, weight lifting and a motorized wheelchair rally.
