WORLD : Chinese UNESCO Official Defects

PARIS — A senior Chinese UNESCO official who sympathized with pro-democracy protests in Beijing has defected, sources at the U.N. cultural body and at the French Foreign Ministry said today.
They said Zhao Fusan disappeared immediately after a June 9 speech in Paris to UNESCO’s 50-member executive board, of which he is a permanent member. He defected soon afterward. It was not known if Zhao, a 63-year-old Protestant theologian and social scientist, had left France.
