A flamboyant minister involved in the Tawana Brawley case was arrested and arraigned in New York City on a 67-count indictment accusing him of stealing $250,000 from the charitable group he started as a youth. After his court appearance, at which he pleaded not guilty, the Rev. Al Sharpton, 34, was taken to Albany, where, his lawyer, Alton Maddox, said, he has been indicted on tax evasion charges. Charges against Sharpton in New York City include scheming to defraud, falsifying business records and grand larceny in connection with the National Youth Movement, an organization Sharpton started when he was 16. Brawley, a black teen-ager, claimed a gang of white males abducted and raped her in November, 1987. She and her advisers refused to cooperate with police, and an investigation found that her allegations were a hoax.
