West Tops East in 605 All-Star Game

The West team, led by Poly High School quarterback Michael Carter and Dominguez High running back Kenny Barnes, defeated the East, 26-20, in the annual 605 All-Star Game Friday night at La Mirada High School stadium.
Carter completed six of 10 passes for 144 yards. Barnes, who gained 55 yards, scored two of the West’s touchdowns; the others came on a pass from Bellflower halfback Shawn Jones to Montebello’s Mike Valenzuela, and a pass from Carter to Poly’s Stanley Alexander.
Millikan’s Monte Boulware ran 45 yards for a TD for the East, which also got scoring passes from St. Paul’s Greg Willig to Wilson’s Wendell Valentine and Millikan’s Rod Marshall.
Poly’s Mike Loyola and La Mirada’s Mark Koenig were named the game’s outstanding linemen, and Carter and linebacker Steve Hayes of Cerritos were the top backs. Barnes was selected player of the game.
