A man was shot to death in an altercation with a visitor, police said Sunday, and a suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder a few minutes afterward.
Freddie Frank Woodard, 53, was felled by a single bullet to the chest Saturday night and died moments afterward, Santa Ana Police Lt. Collie Provence said.
Pasqual Rodriguez Salgado, 25, of Santa Ana was being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail, Provence said.
According to police, a man traveling by bicycle rang the doorbell of Woodard’s home in the 600 block of East Chestnut Avenue about 10:40 p.m. asking for a friend. Woodard told the man that his friend did not live there. The visitor rang the bell a second time, and Woodard gave him the same response. The visitor then pulled a gun and fired it into the air twice. Woodard then got his own gun and went outside with it. The men then fired at each other, police said, but only Woodard was struck. Salgado was arrested as he went to pick up the bicycle at Woodard’s home.
