Calvin Smith and Renaldo Nehemiah led U.S. runners in an international track and field meet at Barcelona, Spain. Smith, a former world record-holder at 100 meters, won the 200 meters in 20.50 seconds, beating fellow American Henry Thomas (20.75).
Nehemiah, world record-holder in the 110-meter hurdles, easily won the event in 13.34, with Emilio Valle of Cuba second in 13.48. Other American winners included Dennis Mitchell in the 100 meters in 10.12; Ray Brown in the 800 meters in 1:45.91; Diane Dixon in the women’s 200 meters in 23.01, and Kathy Freeman in the women’s 400-meter hurdles in 56.10.
