County Seeks Funds for Foreign Books

Los Angeles County supervisors will seek nearly $260,000 in federal grants to help provide more foreign language books and computers at county libraries in Baldwin Park and Gardena, officials said this week.
The board authorized the county librarian to apply for $259,459 in federal money for development of specialized services to the Hispanic community at the Baldwin Park facility and the Korean community in Gardena.
The money would be used for Spanish and Korean books and to add computers and staff at both sites, said County Librarian Linda F. Crismond.
Crismond said that only 25 such grants would be issued in California and each agency may apply for a maximum of two.
Among the eligibility guidelines are “emerging, new and shifting populations,” Crismond said.
