DETROIT — A robbery suspect claiming to hear voices told authorities that he stalked President Bush around the country and nearly made an attempt on Bush’s life here four months ago but could not get close enough to shoot, police said.
John Spencer Daughetee, 34, told Oakland police and FBI agents about the attempt after he was arrested during a bank robbery Friday, police said. Daughetee is being held in Oakland without bail on the bank robbery charges.
Oakland Police Sgt. Sam Maddux said Daughetee, believed to be from Flora, Ind., said he was in a crowd of about 4,000 people that attended Bush’s speech in the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck on April 17. He claimed he had picked out the perfect spot to shoot from but could not reach it because of metal detectors.
