HARARE, Zimbabwe — Poachers have killed 22 rhinoceroses and game wardens have killed nine poachers in Zimbabwe since January, according to figures presented to Parliament on Thursday.
The poachers were shot under the government’s shoot-to-kill policy aimed at protecting the dwindling population of black rhinos. Poachers infiltrating mainly from neighboring Zambia have reduced Zimbabwe’s black rhino population from 70,000 in 1970 to fewer than 4,000 today.
