WASHINGTON — The United States today condemned the escalated fighting that has devastated Lebanon’s Christian areas, urging Syrian and Lebanese troops and various factions to stop what it termed a “slaughter of innocent people.”
“The United States condemns the indiscriminate slaughter of innocent people and the renewed use of heavy-caliber weapons, such as the 240-millimeter mortar, which are in the Syrian arsenal,” State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler told reporters at a briefing.
Syrian troops poured artillery and rocket fire into several Lebanese Christian residential neighborhoods, and at least 27 people were killed and about 125 wounded in battles that erupted Thursday and continued until dawn today.
