NAMES IN THE NEWS : Bakker Trial Jury Selection Begins

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jury selection began today in the federal fraud and conspiracy trial of PTL founder Jim Bakker, who stood accused of misusing millions given to the ministry by its supporters.
Bakker, accompanied by his attorneys and his daughter, Tammy Sue, arrived at the courthouse in a black BMW and offered no comment on the proceedings against him. He disappeared into a conference room to await selection of a jury that will hear a case containing all the elements of a soap opera: sex, money, religion and intrigue.
Bakker’s wife, Tammy Faye, was not by his side today. She was continuing their scaled-down television broadcasts from the couple’s new base of operations in Orlando, Fla.
“I’m just very happy to have my daughter with me,” was Bakker’s only comment as he walked into the courthouse.
