A former Newport Beach resident has donated $110,000 toward building a permanent facility for the Women’s Opportunity Center on the UC Irvine campus.
Donna Shannon O’Bryan, who now lives in St. Helena in Napa County, donated the money for construction and equipment for a 4,000-square-foot building for the nonprofit organization, which has been providing career and personal guidance to women on and off campus since 1970.
The facility is scheduled to be built next summer next to the University Extension building, where the center now has its offices.
O’Bryan, the former president of a Newport Beach interior design firm, has been chairwoman of the center’s donor campaign since February. She moved to St. Helena recently.
The center will name a library in honor of her work with the center, university officials said.
The center has a campaign goal of $1.6 million for the new building. Private donations so far have reached $640,000.
