Santa Ana : Santa Ana Man Shot While Chasing Thieves

Police Monday were seeking information in the wounding of a man who was shot while trying to stop two young men from stealing beer at a Santa Ana convenience store.
Paul Williams, 27, of Santa Ana suffered a bullet wound in his chest about 2 a.m. Sunday when he chased two youths out of the AM-PM Mini Market at Main Street and MacArthur Boulevard. Police said the two youths had just darted out of the store without paying for two 12-packs of beer.
Williams was in satisfactory condition in the intensive care unit at United Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, a nursing supervisor said Monday night.
The youths escaped in a car with two others after leaving the wounded Williams lying next to a gas pump, Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said. None of about 20 people in the store at the time could describe the car, Thomas said.
A store employee said Monday that Williams was brave to go after the thieves.
“He was in line and said, ‘I’ll get them,’ ” clerk Tom Singer said. “Next thing, he was shot. Here was a customer who helped, and he was shot.
“Doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it?”
