A Navy man was killed early Monday when his car slammed into a runaway boat trailer on an Interstate 805 on-ramp, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.
Rex L. Dunning, 23, of San Diego, died at 1:50 a.m. when his car collided with the trailer, which had come off another vehicle taking the ramp minutes earlier, said CHP Officer Judy Brown. Dunning was on the connector ramp from California 94 westbound to I-805 north when he crashed into the boat at 55 m.p.h., Brown said.
The owner of the boat, Thomas Malunes of San Diego, reached University Avenue before he realized he had lost his trailer and called the police, Brown said.
Dunning was stationed at the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center in San Diego.
