Long Beach Fails to Hold Lead, Loses to Pacific

STOCKTON — Scott Lubow scored two touchdowns and Jon Derr hit two 42-yard field goals as the University of the Pacific overcame a 25-16 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Cal State Long Beach, 26-25, in a Big West Conference game.
Derr’s second 42-yarder, with 1:16 remaining, was the difference.
Troy Kopp completed 23 of 39 passes for 320 yards and rushed for 40 yards to lead Pacific.
Pacific overcame a 12-0 deficit to take a 13-12 halftime lead.
The first of Derr’s 42-yard field goals extended Pacific’s lead to 16-12 in the third quarter.
Touchdown passes of four and 18 yards from Paul Oates to Sean Foster yards gave the 49ers a 25-16 lead in the fourth quarter.
Pacific began its comeback on the next play when Kopp hit Jason Edwards on a 46-yard pass play, and Lubow later scored from the one to make it 25-23.
Derr’s game-winning 42-yard field goal attempt bounced over the crossbar.
Pacific is 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Long Beach is 2-3 and 0-2.
