Rock performers Don Henley and Glenn Frey teamed up over the weekend for the first time since the Eagles broke up in 1981, joining voices during Henley’s concerts Friday night at the Universal Amphitheatre and Sunday at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa. Before Frey appeared on Sunday, Henley addressed continuing requests from fans for an Eagles reunion: “People are always asking, ‘Are you guys ever going to get back together?’ I don’t know, but here’s the next best thing--my good friend, Glenn Frey.” Henley, who was wrapping up his eight-week U.S. tour, set down his guitar and stepped behind the drums for versions of “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane” while Frey strummed guitar and contributed harmony vocals. The two had not performed together since the Eagles disbanded nine years ago. As Frey walked off the Pacific Amphitheatre stage, Henley quipped, “Accept no substitutes.”
