WORLD : UNESCO Delays ‘Palestine’ Bid

PARIS — The governing body of UNESCO decided today to delay for two years a decision on a proposal to admit the Palestine Liberation Organization’s self-declared state of “Palestine” to membership.
The Executive Council of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization voted by concensus to recommend postponing until its October, 1991, session the PLO’s request for membership.
The committee’s recommendations will go before the General Conference--a step considered only a formality.
The vote followed intensive lobbying by Western European delegations, the U.S. observer delegation and Israel, which is firmly opposed to the proposal, UNESCO sources said.
