MANILA — Tropical storm Dan smacked the Philippine capital and nearby provinces today, killing 31 people, news reports and officials said.
Packing peak winds of 60 m.p.h., the storm roared across provinces on the southern portion of the main Luzon island from the Pacific Ocean and took a swipe at Manila as it swirled out into the South China Sea in the evening.
Most of the storm-related deaths were caused by flying debris or collapsing trees and houses.
Dan struck while authorities were still assessing damage from Typhoon Angela, which hit the northern Philippines on Friday, killing 118 people.
