Pledging Allegiance

I read in “Judge Rejects Request to Move Gionis Trial” (Oct. 28) that “John Wayne’s name is so ingrained in Orange County residents that at a recent youth group meeting when the children could not find a flag for the Pledge of Allegiance, they gave it facing a picture of the late actor.”
Who led such a youth group in such a flagrant disgrace of our Pledge of Allegiance? People are complaining over the flag-burning issue. Perhaps our President could propose a constitutional amendment against burning pictures of The Duke. Saying the pledge to a picture kind of reminds me of Germany, say around 1930-1940. I kind of wonder if we start saying the pledge to a picture, does the picture become a symbol of the United States and therefore, federally protected (as is the Bald Eagle)?
I still call Orange County Airport “Orange County Airport.”
