NHL ROUNDUP : Gilmour’s Goal Brings Flames’ Skid to End, 4-4

Doug Gilmour scored with 22 seconds left in regulation and the Calgary Flames tied the Buffalo Sabres, 4-4, Thursday night at Calgary to end a three-game losing streak.

For a time, it appeared as if Alexander Mogilny’s goal with 5:37 remaining in the third period would be the winner for the Sabres, who had won four in a row.

Dave Andreychuk, Doug Bodger and Phil Housley also scored for Buffalo, which fought its way back from a 3-1 deficit early in the second period.

Joe Mullen, Gary Suter and Brian MacLellan also scored for the Flames.

Boston 3, Montreal 2--Ray Bourque, Cam Neely and Glen Wesley scored goals 57 seconds apart late in the third period and the Bruins rallied to beat the Canadiens at Boston.

Patrick Roy had a 2-0 lead and appeared on his way to his 11th NHL shutout when the Bruins erupted for their fourth consecutive victory, extending their uneaten streak to six games (5-0-1).

Shayne Corson and Brent Gilchrist scored third-period goals for Montreal before the Bruins struck back to beat the Canadiens for the second time in three meetings.

Pittsburgh 8, Quebec 2--John Cullen had two goals and two assists, and Kevin Stevens added a goal and three assists, as the revitalized Penguins trounced the Nordiques at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins matched their longest winning streak this season with their second consecutive victory, outscoring opponents, 14-2, in the two games. The Nordiques have an NHL-low 11 points through 20 games.

Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux extended his point-scoring streak to eight games with his 11th goal of the season.

New York Islanders 6, Toronto 2--Pat LaFontaine had two goals and an assist as the Islanders broke a six-game losing streak by turning back the Maple Leafs at Uniondale, N.Y.

The Islanders won for the first time since a 3-2 win over Detroit on Nov. 4 and for only the second time in 13 games. Their record in that period is 2-9-2. The Maple Leafs were 4-1 in their previous five games.

The Islanders, 2-8-2 at home this season, took a 4-1 lead after one period by scoring four times in seven shots against goaltender Peter Ing, making his first NHL start.

St. Louis 7, Detroit 2--Paul MacLean and Paul Cavallini scored two goals each during a four-goal second period at Detroit and the Blues handed the Red Wings their seventh consecutive defeat.

The Blues capitalized on four of six power-play chances for their sixth victory against one defeat and three ties in 10 games. Detroit (4-13-3) has allowed 11 power-play goals in its last 23 short-handed situations.

The Red Wings, who last won Oct. 19, saw their winless streak extended to 12 games (0-9-3).

Philadelphia 6, Minnesota 3--Pelle Eklund scored twice and Mike Bullard had a goal and three assists at Philadelphia as the Flyers ended the North Stars’ four-game winning streak.

The victory gave the Flyers (8-8-3) a .500 record for the first time this season.

Vancouver 4, Chicago 3--Petri Skriko scored a rare goal on a power play in the third period to lead the Canucks over the Blackhawks in Vancouver.

It was the Canucks’ first goal with a manpower advantage in five games, covering 18 power plays.

Brian Bradley, Kevan Guy and Steve Bozek scored the other goals as the Canucks (9-9-2) ended a four-game winless streak. Doug Wilson and Bob Murray got power-play goals for Chicago, with the other score from Steve Thomas at even strength.

Chicago, with the best overall record in the league, dropped to 14-7-1 as the Blackhawks’ four-game winning streak ended.
