LAS VEGAS — A 76-year-old Las Vegas retiree won $4.6 million on a dollar slot machine at the new Mirage resort just hours after its grand opening, a casino spokesman said Thursday.
Elmer Sherwin won $4,653,697.80 on a Megabucks dollar slot machine at the lavish new hotel-casino about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. The Mirage, the newest resort on the Strip, opened shortly after noon.
Sherwin had been playing the machine for about 90 minutes and fed it about $100 before hitting the jackpot, the spokesman said. Sherwin worked for General Electric in Cleveland before retiring and moving to Las Vegas about five years ago, the spokesman said.
The check presentation is scheduled today at the hotel after state gaming officials verify the jackpot, which will be paid in annual installments over a 20-year period.
A Mirage spokesman claimed that the jackpot was the largest ever won at a slot machine in Las Vegas. A jackpot of about $6 million was won in Reno a few years ago, the Mirage spokesman said.
