A former sheriff’s deputy in Georgia was sentenced to a year of probation and fined $800 after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges in the beating of a trucker after a 50-mile chase last spring.
The driver’s hitchhiking passenger, Mark Charles Nanz, 29, of San Diego, was killed by bullets fired during the April 26 chase.
Former Deputy David N. Ryals, 23, pleaded guilty to simple battery in Bryan County Superior Court in Pembroke, Ga., last week.
The chase started on Interstate 95 in Glynn County, Ga., after the trucker refused to stop for police, and ended in Bryan County when officers fired more than 30 rounds into the cab. Both the driver, Klaus Kirk, 37, of Denver, and Nanz were struck by bullets, but Kirk survived.
