Man Working Under Car Injured in Hit-and-Run

A suspected drunk driver ended up doing the wrong thing at the wrong time Saturday morning when he slammed into a parked car, injuring a man working underneath it, then drove away as a Hawthorne police detective was driving past.
The detective, who witnessed the incident at about 9:30 a.m., gave chase as the suspect drove away from the scene on Crenshaw Boulevard just south of Manhattan Beach Boulevard. Two Gardena police units helped stop the 1976 Pontiac Ventura several blocks away, Gardena Sgt. Tom Monson said.
Gardena police arrested the driver, Christopher Russell, 24, of Redondo Beach, and booked him on suspicion of felony drunk driving and felony hit-and-run, Monson said.
The injured man could not be identified, Monson said, because a police report that would provide that information had not yet been filed. Monson said the man was taken to Harbor General Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition.
