* UNIONS: The Long Beach City Council will decide Tuesday whether to approve a contract that would end a bitter yearlong labor dispute between the city and the police union. Police officers voted Thursday to accept the contract.
* CENSUS TAKERS: A 12-hour effort will be launched Tuesday night to count the nation’s homeless. Counters will begin their task at 6 p.m. by visiting emergency shelters, all-night theaters and low-rent hotels.
* PLAYGROUND: A group of parents and officials representing the Los Angeles Unified School District and state and county health agencies will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Leo P. Turner Community Center in Cudahy to discuss ways of dealing with small pools of black petroleum sludge that have oozed onto the playground at Park Avenue Elementary School.
