Victories by sprinters Michael Johnson, Calvin Smith and Evelyn Ashford highlighted the City of Grosseto track and field meet in Italy.
Johnson won the 200 meters in 20.29 seconds. He indicated that he will try for the world record in Wednesday’s major meet at Zurich, Switzerland, where he hopes to beat the record of 19.72 by Italy’s Pietro Mennea in 1979.
Smith won the men’s 100 in 10.37, Ashford the women’s 100 in 11.27, and Renaldo Nehemiah edged Roger Kingdom in 13.44 in the 110-meter hurdles.
