WASHINGTON — Union employees of United Press International accepted a 35%, 90-day pay cut today in what company and union officials described as an effort to keep the financially troubled news service going while its owners seek a buyer.
Chris Dahl, secretary-treasurer of the Wire Service Guild, said 62% of those voting approved the reduction.
The weekly salary of a top scale newsperson at UPI will be reduced from $690 to $448. A first-year newsperson will be paid $234 a week, down from $360.
The pay reductions take effect Saturday and end Feb. 14.
