NATION : Rep. Martin Could Get Labor Post

From Times Wire Services

The White House is considering Rep. Lynn Martin of Illinois, who just lost a bid for the U.S. Senate, to succeed outgoing Labor Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole, an Administration source said today.

Martin told President Bush last Thursday that she was interested in the job, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Martin, a 10-year Republican House veteran, had talked to Bush about the job immediately after she lost the Nov. 6 election and then again last week before he left for his Thanksgiving trip to Europe and Saudi Arabia, the source said.
